Shot in the Dark (literally)

Posted July 28th, 2011 by John Novosel, Jr. with No Comments

It’s 9:30pm and we’re hitting balls in the dark.  Currently its like 101 degrees and the best time to hit is early morning or late at night.  We can’t see where they’re going, but the new X2 from FlightScope can and with the iPad connection it’s super easy to use & see.  Here is a screen shot from the iPad (not much carry with range balls and hitting into the wind).

We’ll be using the X2 at our upcoming Tour Tempo Distance School with special guest instructor Pat Dempsey.  Contact me for more details…

Wide Variety of tempo’s this week

Posted July 5th, 2011 by John Novosel, Jr. with No Comments

Wide Variety of tempo’s this week (just like there is a wide variety of swings)

Rickie Fowler’s normal tempo is right around 18/6, so he is superfast. However, in the 3rd round he hooked a drive and his tempo was 23/6, so he got way too slow on his backswing.

KJ Choi is slower paced and is one of the few that doesn’t fit the 3:1. His tempo is around 22/10. The interesting thing here is that he could maintain his tempo with the short game 20/10 tones. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this for everyone, but it’s always good to experiment. (he has such a unique build/background for a golfer – former powerlifter and very different swing. one of the few pro’s that ‘casts’ from the top. When you cast, you’ll have a longer downswing frame count)

Nick Watney is around 24/8, so a good 3:1 and he could use the 24/8 tones. I saw around, because some swings are 25/8 and some are 24/9. Depends on how you count the frames. Anyway, the time frames are so small, it doesn’t have to be perfect. That’s the beauty of Tour Tempo.

The week of the ‘tweener’

Posted June 27th, 2011 by John Novosel, Jr. with No Comments

Freddy Yak’s tempo was 3:1, he was right in between 27/9 and 24/8.  (Ryan Moore was between 27/9 and 30/10)  They were both 2:1 in their putting tempo.

Similarly Yani Tseng was 3:1 she was in between 21/7 and 24/8.

The lesson to be learned here is that you don’t have to be exactly 24/8, you can be 23/8 or 22/7.  You just need to be around 3:1 and you need to be consistent.  The main thing you’ll have to do is figure out which tones to use.  Normally, if you’re in between tones, you end up listening to the faster tones (because reaction time is built in), but you need to experiment and see what works for you.

On the 13th tee shot in the 3rd round Patrick Cantlay’s shot in the water was 33:7 – almost 5:1!!  Chamblee commented that he was real quick from the top.  So he was real slow, then real quick.  This is the worst combination of all and what most amateurs do in their swings.  The after a swing like this, the advice will be, “you need to slow down”……the problem is that they slow down the backswing, when they really need to SPEED up the backswing and actually slow down on the downswing.  This is why Tour Tempo is so great, it’s the same day in and day out, so you can count on it.  You can’t count on the thought ‘slow’ or ‘smooth’ or whatever.

Side note: this might be for Tech Tuesday, PING has a new iphone app that measures your tempo.  You can compare yourself to PING staffers like Hunter Mahan, etc….Guess what the ratio is of the PING staffers on tour?  2:1

So much to Blog about so little time……

Dear Reader,

I’ve literally been on a world tour.  I’ve just returned from Amsterdam where I presented the concepts of Tour Tempo to the PGA of Holland.  Some of the other presenters included Mike and Andy from Stack & Tilt.  Anyway, it was a great teaching conference and Tour Tempo was well received with the PGA members.  I had many great questions and comments that I’ll bring up in upcoming blogs.

Here is a great side story while I was there.  If you want to play golf in Holland, you have to get a ‘license’.  You can’t just show up and play.  You must prove you can hit 5 balls over 200 yards within a certain grid (for a man) and also shoot 7 over par or less for three holes.  Sounds crazy, but it makes some sense and beginning golfers take a lot of lessons.

No worldwide trips for awhile, so I’ll be back to regular blogging and there’s plenty to talk about from this trip and also the emergence of the super athlete on tour (Dustin Johnson, Gary Woodland, etc….)
